Choosing a boiler
Choosing the right boiler for your home
There is no single boiler type that suits every property. The right choice depends on your home's size, hot water demand, existing pipework, and whether you have a storage cylinder. We recommend based on your actual requirements — not on which model carries the largest margin.
Combi boilers heat water on demand directly from the mains. There is no stored hot water cylinder, which saves space and reduces heat losses — making them well suited to smaller properties with one or two bathrooms and moderate hot water demand.
System boilers work with a separate hot water cylinder. The boiler heats both the central heating circuit and the stored water in the cylinder, but all the major components are built into the boiler unit itself. They suit larger properties with higher hot water demand or multiple bathrooms, and are compatible with solar thermal and heat pump cylinders.
Regular (heat-only) boilers work with both a hot water cylinder and a cold water storage tank in the loft. They are typically found in older properties with existing gravity-fed systems, and can be the right choice when a full system conversion is not practical or cost-effective.

Boilers from leading manufacturers
As well as Worcester Bosch, we install boilers from other leading manufacturers including Vaillant. Both brands offer reliable, A-rated condensing boilers with strong warranty support. We advise on the most appropriate product for your property, budget, and long-term requirements — not on brand loyalty.

Why correct boiler sizing matters
A boiler that is too large for the property will short-cycle — firing briefly and shutting off repeatedly rather than running steadily. This wastes gas, increases wear on components, and reduces efficiency. An undersized boiler will struggle to meet demand during cold weather or periods of high hot water use.
We size boilers based on the actual heating and hot water demand of your property, not a rule of thumb. For properties where heat pump installation is a possibility in the future, we also consider compatibility at the point of specifying your new system.
Protection
System protection at installation
Installing a new boiler into a contaminated heating system is one of the most common causes of premature boiler failure. Magnetite sludge, corrosion debris, and scale from the old system will circulate through the new boiler's heat exchanger if the system is not cleaned first.
We assess the condition of the existing system before installation. Where the pipework and radiators contain significant contamination, a system flush or powerflush is recommended before the new boiler goes in. On completion, we add a corrosion inhibitor and fit a magnetic system filter to protect the new boiler long-term. Many manufacturers require this as a condition of the extended warranty.

What to expect
We begin with a survey of your existing system and heating requirements. Once you accept a quote, we agree a convenient installation date and carry out the work cleanly and efficiently, usually completing a straightforward boiler replacement in a single day.
On completion, we commission the boiler fully, carry out all required checks, walk you through the controls and settings, and leave you with all relevant documentation. We register the warranty on your behalf and advise on the recommended annual service interval.

Frequently asked questions
What type of boiler is right for my property?
The best boiler type depends on your property size, the number of bathrooms, your current hot water setup, and the condition of the existing pipework. A combi boiler suits many smaller homes with one bathroom and moderate demand. Larger homes with multiple bathrooms usually benefit from a system or regular boiler with a hot water cylinder. We assess your property and recommend the right option — there is no charge for the survey.
Do I need a system flush before a new boiler is installed?
In many cases, yes. If your existing heating system has been in use for several years without a powerflush, there is likely to be magnetite sludge and corrosion debris in the pipework and radiators. Fitting a new boiler into a contaminated system risks damaging the new heat exchanger and voiding parts of the extended warranty. We check the system condition as part of the survey and advise honestly on whether a flush is needed.
Can you install any make of boiler?
We install boilers from a range of leading manufacturers and can advise on which brand and model is most appropriate for your property. As Worcester Bosch Accredited Installers, we have particular expertise with the Worcester Bosch range and can offer the extended warranty benefits available through that accreditation. If you have a preference for a specific brand, we are happy to discuss it.
How long does a boiler installation take?
A straightforward like-for-like combi swap can often be completed in a single day. More involved work — such as a system-to-combi conversion, relocating the boiler, or extensive pipework alterations — may take one to two days. We confirm the likely timescale for your specific job as part of the survey, so there are no surprises on the day.
